RE: Early 20s Considering Doing This

Give it a try! If it doesn't work out , what have you lost?
When you're shopping for an RV , look for one that's as self contained as possible. You'll need to save money by boon docking and dry camping.
Solar panels , extra batteries , 12 volt television , large and volume matched fresh and gray tanks. Also the smaller that it is the more camping areas you'll fit into ,you'll be less conspicuous if you boon dock in populated areas and you won't need another vehicle.
National parks seem like great places to get seasonal jobs.

Here are a couple of artistic people who are fulling timing on budgets.
Might get some ideas or inspiration from them.

RE: Intro and DIY "Wanna-B" Fabrication/Mat'ls Qs

Don't know about any of the other things but here's a source for headliner material. http://www.stockinteriors.com/headlinerfabric.asp
We ordered a kit ( fabric and glue ) for our truck and redid the headliner. It came out very nice. The glue is really sticky so get some help if possible.

RE: Refrigerator Fan

We have one in the outside compartment blowing up on the coils. It really makes a difference in hot weather. It's a 12 volt squirrel cage from Radio Shack controlled with a thermostatic fan switch from a heating and air conditioning supply house. Click here for pictures.

RE: Crater Lake

We just came from Crater lake - stayed there last week end - Friday and Saturday nights. Almost all of the snow is gone. I didn't notice that any parts of the campground were closed but I may have missed that. There's a small Indian casino at Chiloquin that allows overnight parking. It has a big, shady ,level lot. Other than that the national forests in this part of Oregon are great for boondocking. A little dusty but plenty of access roads.
The park wasn't very busy. We were surprised because it was the weekend but I guess it's just a little to far off the beaten path.

RE: AT & T Service

We have AT&T for our cell phone and our air card service. Our phone seems to need to be restarted to work correctly but then it's fine.
Our internet works great. We travel extensively and the only place where we have had problems is an area covered by an AT&T partner - northern California ,southern Oregon and parts of Idaho. We first ran into this two years ago and now we're back in the area and could not connect. Five bars but we couldn't get in. Hours on the phone. We finally found out that all we needed to do was update out communications manager. Now everything's working again. If you click on the "check for updates" under tools on the communications manager icon , it never says that there are updates. You have to go to the AT&T website and find the download page for communications manager and see if you have the latest version.
One thing I really like is the free high speed WiFi that we can get now at McDonalds and Starbucks. It's not needed in cities that have 3G but if you're in small towns as we often are it's great , especially if you need to download or upload a large file. You must have the latest communication manager to get onto the WiFi.

RE: What does a CG restriction called 'no rain ditching' mean?

We used to do this when we were kids and went camping in a big old canvas tent. If you didn't do it and it rained there would be a stream running under your sleeping bag. I love our motorhome! ;)

RE: Uh - Slip Sliding Away????

I don't think so. Costs for many things are going to rise no matter where you are living - stick home or RV. Our biggest expense is gasoline and we have control over that. We stay in campgrounds rarely which saves a ton of money. In fact right now we're camped a national forest , not far from a little town. If you want or need to have full hook ups in a resort type RV park you might have to rethink a few things.

RE: West Virginia Casino Boondocking

We stay in casino lots on our travels too. If you haven't already consider sending a report to this site. http://www.casinocamper.com/States.htm
It's run by a forum member and is very helpful if you're looking for rules and regulations for casino parking.
Hope you had a good time!

RE: Rattling Vent Cover

Replacing the vent covers will solve the problem for awhile but everything will get sloppy again with use and the rattles will be back. We found an easy fix if you don't want to go to the expense of installing MaxAir covers. Buy some of the littlest bungy cords that you can find. Hook one end to the cross bar on the frame and the other end to the cross bar on the vent cover. Adjust until there's a little tension when the vent is opened. Almost total silence , even on windy days. You may have to drill a few small holes in the cross members.

RE: Winter RV'ing in class C

If you're planning on winter camping you'll be much happier with enclosed tanks.
We've had both enclosed and unenclosed. Our tanks froze completely one year when we took our to daughter to upstate New York to college. They didn't thaw until days later in Georgia. With the enclosed bottom we have some heat blowing in from the furnace and if it's really cold we put a small heater in the enclosure. Make sure the valves are also in the enclosure.

RE: Motels & Class B

Before my mother-in -law passed away , we took her on many trips. She stayed in a motel and we slept in the parking lot in our small class C. Sometimes we asked if it was okay , other times we didn't. Only once did we get a bad reaction. We stopped at a small mom and pop motel in rural Pennsylvania. The woman refused to allow us to sleep in our motorhome in the parking lot. She lost our business (had few other customers) and we moved down the road to anther motel where we were welcome.

Take a look in RVing FAQ at the top of the page for the abbreviations and a lot more information.
We've never used it but many people use Ebay to find used motorhomes.

RE: Lassen Park fires?

We're not there but were planning on going through that area too , coming from Reno north to Oregon. This website has up to date information and some phone numbers. http://www.fire.ca.gov/index_incidents.php
It looks like some of the roads may be closed and the fire isn't under control yet. We're probably going to skip it rather than risk having to backtrack if we come to a closed road.
There are no road closures near Lassen National Park. There isn't even any fires in the park, not sure where all this info is coming from.
You're right. It looks like they lifted the road restrictions. They weren't actually in the park but were on some of the roads leading to the park , specifically Rt 89 and Rt 36. Parts of Rt 70 are still closed. The web page doesn't give detailed information but there is a number to call for Lassen county. The fire that I'm concerned about is the Corral fire which is only 10% contained. but again there's not a lot of information on the site but there's a phone number to call about this fire.
That fire is at Eagle Lake and a long ways from Lassen National Park. Also the Hwy 70 portion that was closed is also a very long way from there, actually, all of 70 is a ways from there. There will be some haze from smoke, I just looked at a webcam near Manzanita Lake and it didn't look all that bad. Way better than where you have been in Verdi, I know, I live right above that off of I-80.
Thanks for the information. I think we'll try going to Lassen , just making sure that we don't get boxed in if they have to close some of the roads. The conditions seem to change fairly fast. We had been planning on going west on 70 to 89. A section of that route was closed until very recently. Route 89 from where it intersects with 70 and north to Greenville..
Anyone coming from the west and using Route 32 should be aware that a section of that is closed now , from Butte Meadows to the intersection of 89. More info here http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist2/
